masks...
The key to destroying the masks in our lives is to really know and trust that God sees behind all of our masks.
This year our teens are being challenged and encouraged to live with "NO FEAR". One of the fears we tackled at the kickoff was not to be afraid of destroying the masks we can so quickly put on. The 3 masks we talked about were:
1) the mask of "I am no different" - this is the mask of acting like the world when you are a Christ-follower
2) the mask of "I will do anything to be accepted" - this one is behaving and saying things that really are not who we are in order to be accepted. it's being fake to be accepted. the challenge is that we need to learn to come to Christ to know REAL acceptance and forgiveness in order to not wear the mask so we don't have the fear of rejection.
3) the mask of "everything is fine" - this is the mask of telling people (and God) we are "ok" when in truth we are dying inside. Each of us are dying inside and dead spiritually without Christ. When we surrender to Jesus' love and presence and receive his gift of salvation, we can put down the mask of "everything is fine" and be honest with him and others when life is tough.
